WHOIS for domains is a standard internet function that provides registration information.
You can determine when a domain was first registered and when the registration will expire. You can generally tell who owns a domain name as well as their contact information. In recent years, more people have started to disguise their names to prevent spammers from finding them.
Many companies are authorized to register domain names but there is only one organization that manages the registry for each Top Level Domain (TLD). Verisign manages the registry for the .com, .net, .name TLDs and a few others. The Public Interest Registry is the authoritative registry for the .org TLD.
