About MapIP.net
MapIP.net provides tools to help research and monitor information related to
domain names, IP addresses, mail servers and more. Our comprehensive
database is growing daily and we will continue to add new features to the web
site in the future.
Our current focus is on Internet Protocol Version 4 addresses - also known as
IPv4. Most of the planet continues to use IPv4 for web related services.
IPv4 describes an IP Address convention using 4 octets of numbers. As an
example, 192.0.0.1 is an IP Address in IPv4 dotted decimal notation. This
is the format used throughout the site. One of the issues with IPv4 is a
limited number of possible IP Addresses - there are only 4.3 billion available.
These addresses will be exhausted at some point in the future as more and more
phones, computers, web sites, etc. join the internet. The next generation
protocol is called IPv6 and it will increase the number of possible IP Addresses
to roughly 3.4 x 1038 power.
Adoption of IPv6 as of February, 2014 is roughly 3%. As usage grows,
MapIP.net will accommodate IPv6 address formats.
Most of the pages (but not all) requesting a domain name will require only the
doman name and the top level domain (TLD). The top level domain is the
name appearing after the last period (.) the the domain name. Common TLD's
include .com, .net and .org. For many years, TLD's were limited and
restricted to individual country names (e. .UK or .CA) but in recent years,
their use has expanded dramatically to include names like .mobi, .academy,
.construction, .money, .pets and hundreds more. MapIP.net is primarily
centered on traditional non-government TLD's in the U.S.
